Barbara's Family Restaurant sits right on US Highway 41 in Ruskin — a low building with a bright blue A-frame roof and a hand-painted cream sign you can read from the road. It's not a new concept or a fresh rebrand. It's a well-worn local institution that's been feeding the South Shore the same honest way for years.

We open at 7 in the morning and we're done at 2 in the afternoon, every single day. Breakfast and lunch — thick buttermilk pancakes, eggs and grits, biscuits and gravy in the morning; burgers, specialty sandwiches, seafood platters and homestyle plates through the middle of the day. Portions are generous and the prices are fair, because that's what neighbors deserve.

Most of the folks who walk in are regulars — retirees, working families, people who bring their kids and get greeted by name at the door. That's the whole point. Barbara's isn't trying to be a trendy brunch spot or a polished chain. It's the kind of place a town keeps.
